For many people living in rural North Northumberland, the ability to drive is not a convenience — it is a lifeline. Access to services, to family, to the full range of everyday life depends on it in ways that are difficult to overstate for those who have never lived somewhere that the nearest supermarket is fifteen miles away and buses rare.
That is why the Older Drivers Awareness Session held at Bell View on Friday 27th March felt like such an important event. Delivered by Northumbria Police Motor Patrols Safety Unit, the free two-hour session was designed to help drivers stay safe, maintain their independence and keep up to date with changes in the law — all in a friendly, accessible and entirely non-judgmental format.
The session was well-attended, and the feedback was enthusiastic. “Brilliant — so much good information” captured the mood of the morning neatly. Northumbria Police’s Motor Patrols Safety Unit brought genuine expertise to the room, and there was plenty of lively discussion about the realities of driving in rural areas, the challenges of changing road conditions, and the ways in which drivers of all ages can stay confident and safe.
Bell View was proud to host this session. Supporting independence — including the independence that comes with being able to get in the car and go — is fundamental to what we do. We are grateful to Northumbria Police for their time and expertise, and to everyone who came along.
